What does L Arginine do?

Arginine is identified as a non-essential amino acid, however research indicates that it is ‘conditionally essential’ in that the body may not be able to manufacture a sufficient amount in times of rapid growth, trauma and other physical stresses. This has prompted research into the use of arginine supplementation to help aid recovery.

Arginine is also required for optimum growth and takes part in the gradual release of growth hormones. It is also involved in the removal from the body of ammonia, a waste product of nitrogen metabolism. The body uses arginine to make nitric oxide (NO), a substance that both relaxes and widens blood vessels. Therefore arginine is an important factor in the maintenance of healthy blood flow around the body and for overall Cardiovascular performance.

What is Arginine?

Arginine is an a-amino acid and was first isolated in 1886 from a lupin seed extract by the Swiss chemist Ernst Schultze. The L-Arginine is one of the 20 most common natural amino acids.

In mammals, arginine is classified as a conditionally essential or semiessential amino acid, depending on the health and developmental stage of the particular individual. Amino acid is nutritionally essential for preterm infants, who are unable to synthesize or create arginine internally. Conditions such as sepsis, burns, trauma and surgical operations, put an increased demand on the body for the synthesis of L-Arginine.
