What does Vitamin B12 do?

Vitamin B12 contributes to the normal function of the Immune System and is also involved in the manufacture of red blood cells. Like most B Vitamins, B-12 contributes to the processe that release Energy from foods (normal energy metabolism) and is increasingly recommended as a supplement for the elderly, who may have a compromised diet.

Also known as Cyanocobalamin, this complex substance contains the mineral colbalt at its centre. Principally, it participates in the rapid regeneration of red blood cells and bone marrow. It is also necessary for myelin sheath production (essential for a fully functional nervous system) and for a healthy Cardiovascular system. As it is found mainly in animal based foodstuffs such as meat, practitioners frequently recommend this particular B vitamin to vegans and vegetarians.

What is Vitamin B12 used for?

Vitamin B12 was first isolated from liver in 1948 and is needed for the synthesis of DNA and for normal metabolism of nerve tissue. However in cases of achlorhydria (absence of hydrochloric acid in the stomach) the vitamin may not be extracted from Food. After the age of 50 some people are less able to absorb it from their food. Mild deficiency may put people at risk of heart disease, Depression or even dementia (it is noted that people suffering from this disease tend to have low levels). Serious deficiency leads to pernicious anaemia which if left untreated could be fatal.
